Overrating the underrated

Post by smiths32 »

I don't read gaming magazines and I'm quite sure that EGM isn't even availiable where I live but I was pretty shocked to see what they defined as the "Top 10 most overrated games." The list:

10. Ico (WTF!)
9. Shenmue (" ")
8. Banjo-Kazooie
7. Final Fantasy IX (One of the best in the series)
6. NIGHTS ("WTF DO yOu dO IN ThIs GaMe!!??)
5. Perfect Dark
4. Donkey Kong 64
3. Killer Instinct
2. Donkey Kong Country (They got one right at least)
1. Battle Arena Toshinden

I haven't all of these, but I think its painfully obvious that EGM's staff need to look up the word "Overrated" in the dictionary. If anything: Ico, Shenmue and NIGHTS are underrated and are masterpieces. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, but calling these games "Overrated" is just no...

Yeah, that list is ridiculous.

Ico, Shenmue, FF9, NiGHTS, Perfect Dark, and DKC don't belong on that list.

FF7 should be #1.

You non-conformist, you. ;) I suppose it's a marmite thing. I would say SSBM is one of the stupidest things I've ever played (because ow, my eyes really fucking hurt after playing that game for 3 minutes).

Seriously though, NiGHTS? And Shenmue? And fucking Ico? NO!
Killer Instinct, yes. I don't remember DK 64 ever being that popular in the first place, though.

I'd say Perfect Dark was vastly underrated, not overrated. Everyone waxes lyrical about the wonders of Goldeneye, but PD did everything one better, with a deeper and more complex multiplayer (easily my favourite console multiplayer game), sharp controls, smooth graphics, excellent gadgets, decent voice acting, and a superb storyline. Goldeneye had the same fucking maps over again in multiplayer - what was it, Library or something, it was cloned a jillion times but with like 2 different doors or a floor missing - and a wobbly plot based very loosely around a wobbly movie. And the guards were retarded.

Shit, talk like that makes me want to set up my N64 again.

Halo was good. Halo wasn't God. It was way overrated.

A villain that doesn't suck, for one.

It seems that both the main character and the main villain from the FF games are always whiny bitches, which is a formula that gets old pretty quick. FFIX was an exception to that, and so is therefore the best.

It's pretty much the best console FPS.

Yeah, I agree. And it was short, I beat it in a day.
Although the multiplayer is quite entertaining.

By the time I got up to and finished The Library level in Halo, its fate was sealed in that I decided it was mediocre and incredibly overrated (well, the single player anyway). No video game designers, no matter how stumped for good creative ideas in their game, should ever force such a long, tedious and repetitive level on a FPS player. Ever.

I agree that the multiplayer mode is fun though, unquestionably the greatest feature of the game.

Yeah, I felt it was pretty repetitive as well. The story was a little interesting, the the game was the same thing the whole way through.

People talk positively about Donkey Kong 64? People talk about Battle Arena Toshinden at all?

Yeah, I'm really surprised Battle Arena Toshinden got number one.

Aren't these all games they gave 9's and 10's to? They really are running out of shit to publish.

I think what they meant to do is make a list of games with a lot of industry hype around them, but they had to title it something that would get people riled up.
